Two men, two continents and 25,000 kilometres worth of adrenalin-laced excitement. When Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman set off on two BMW R 1200 GS Adventure motorcycles on the Long Way Down southward from John O’Groats in May 2007, expectations as to what they would encounter were almost impossible to imagine. Three months and 18 countries later, encountering some of the most spectacular people and scenery yet seen on a road trip of this kind, the two friends are still taking in what has proved to be the biking journey of a lifetime.
Now, courtesy of EMI Records, the whole epic adventure is available to own and revisit again and again, as Long Way Down has just been released on DVD.
Having recently inspired audiences to critical acclaim on BBC television in the UK (where on average 3.7 million viewers have tuned in to the Sunday evening shows), the specially packaged double disc DVD offers the complete TV series of Long Way Down and documents Ewan and Charley’s extraordinary journey from Scotland’s farthest nether-regions right through to the southernmost tip of Africa.
Featuring around six-and-a-half hours of stunning, inspiring visuals from countries such as Libya, Ethiopia, Sudan, Rwanda and South Africa, the Long Way Down DVD also includes a number of extras, such as previously unseen extended footage, photo gallery, interactive route map and much more.
From blinding sandstorms to searing temperatures, tricky border crossings and extreme riding conditions Long Way Down is an awe-inspiring adventure which sees two friends together experience the undiscovered wonders of a continent rich in all possible interpretations of the word ‘amazing’. As Ewan McGregor says: “Long Way Down has been an amazing journey and it has been a real privilege to be able to experience these diverse and beautiful places. We’ve had the opportunity to see such different ways of life to ours and have travelled to remote places very few people have access to. The sense of freedom and exploration has been incredible.”
Encompassing two continents and 18 countries, the Long Way Down DVD also features exclusive unseen footage of Ewan and Charley’s trip and preparations, including Ewan and Charley being put through their paces with some hostile environment training; the preparation of the bikes; white water rafting in Uganda; seeing the meeting of the Nile; and visiting one of the oldest churches in Ethiopia.
The DVD also offers the opportunity to view Ewan and Charley’s epic 25,000 kilometre journey via an interactive map whereby viewers can learn more about the route and the countries encompassed on the trip. A trip photo gallery allows viewers to view a number of photos that Ewan, Charley and the team took themselves offering the unique opportunity to gain a behind-the-scenes view of the adventure.
The Long Way Down DVD is available from all good online retailers and is available with English and German subtitles. For more information about the DVD, please visit the www.longwaydown.com website, which is also selling PAL and NTSC versions of the DVD.
