BMW Motorrad’s Chris Pfeiffer has been invited to perform his stunt show at the world famous Race of Champions event, which takes place over the weekend of 15-16 December at the new Wembley Stadium in England.
The spectacular event will see the world’s most famous racing drivers, including Michael Schumacher, David Coulthard and Jenson Button, go head-to-head in a champion of champions decider. The Race of Champions (ROC) was created in 1988 with a simple premise: using identical equipment and track, drivers can prove themselves based on talent alone. The drivers compete in a series of knockout heats in their own division to determine their class champion, then compete in a shoot-out to determine who is the ‘master of motorsport’.
Drivers confirmed for 2007 include seven-times Formula One World Champion Michael Schumacher; Formula One star Jenson Button; reigning World Touring Car Champion, Andy Priaulx; Red Bull Racing’s David Coulthard; triple Champ Car Champion Sébastien Bourdais; seven-times Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen ; eight-times X-Games Champion Travis Pastrana; double World Rally Champion, Marcus Grönholm; Renault F1’s Heikki Kovalainen; and 2003 World Rally Champion, Petter Solberg.
“I’m very happy about being asked to do a show at the Race of Champions,” said Chris. “I’m also looking forward to performing in front of Michael Schumacher. I know his brother Ralph, but I’ve not met him yet, and I’ve heard he is a big bike fan. It’s also great for me to have the exposure in front of so many of the big names in motorsport, not to mention on live TV and in front of the massive crowd expected at Wembley!”
This traditional end-of-season showdown attracts spectators from across Europe. For three years the event, held at the Stade de France in Paris, attracted well over 50,000 spectators each year. Action from the Race of Champions 2006 was broadcast in over 200 countries and watched by more than 186 million viewers.
In order to hold the event at Wembley’s famous football stadium, the ‘hallowed’ pitch has had to be covered with 1,800 tonnes of tarmac. The circuit design, which sees two lanes running parallel to allow drivers to race within the confines of the stadium, has been modified to account for Wembley's dimensions. The fact that the ground slopes away from the pitch will add drama to the racing because there will be four corners with opposite camber, which will give the cars less grip, thus providing even more spectacular racing.
It will cost more than £150,000 just to re-lay the famous football pitch after The Race of Champions is over, but this won’t bother Chris, who is delighted to have some grippy, new tarmac to perform on for a change!
“The conditions should be perfect for me, with no dirt on the track and perfect tarmac to ride the F 800 on. I’ll also be able to move around the track and concentrate on entertaining different areas of the crowd, which is great. I’ve been practising a few new moves just for this event, so there will be plenty of tricks to show the motorsport fans. In truth though, I’m just pleased to be there. I had surgery on an old knee injury on 15 November, so wasn’t sure if I was going to recover in time, but I’ve been out practising on the F 800 and on the motocross track, and my knee is already better than it was before the surgery.”
And while many of us will be looking forward to relaxing for the seasonal holidays, Chris already has several events that he is preparing for. The talented German rider will be performing shows in Lisbon at the start of the 2008 Dakar Rally in the first week of January. After this, he’ll then fly straight to Las Vegas to perform at the BMW F1 pit party and then he’s considering making the trip east to Florida in mid-January to ride at the international Stuntwars competition, which he won in 2006 and finished second in 2007.
